About the Artist
Santi Ruggeri was born in Mexico City in a neighborhood named Lomas Verdes, which means Green Hills in Spanish. When he turned four, his parents moved back to the United States to live in Texas for one year, then Maryland for the rest of the years. He currently lives in the self-renovated 1992 Dodge Ram Van called the Goobsmobile, which is currently parked in his Grandma’s driveway.
Not afraid to take up any endeavor that catches his interest, Santi has amassed a number of identifiers. He is an illustrator, a photographer, a writer, a seamster, an animator, a woodworker, a videographer, a snowboarder, a dancer, a hiker, a card counter, a businessman, and a friend.
Though he might not have any formal education in the arts, Santi creates nonetheless, in all that gives him joy. His practice aims for the most humble of goals, getting you to laugh.
Why I Do What I Do
I am a maker of all things wacky, silly, funky, and goofy.
I have been drawing cartoony characters in silly situations since the dawn of this new millennium. My first and most important goal with my illustration has always been to make people laugh. I realized how important this was for me during the church sermons that my parents used to take my siblings and me to while growing up. Drawing comics on the backs of tithe envelopes and getting my brother and sister to laugh loud enough to disrupt service gave me an unholy amount of joy. These days, my illustration takes form in multiple different mediums, including oil pastel, gouache, watercolor, colored pencil, and ink.
As for photography, in my heart of hearts, I consider myself a travel photographer. Travel is one of my greatest passions in life, as I believe that this world is too big not to explore. Most often, I aim to capture the abstract landscapes that you see multiple miles in the backcountry, the hustle and bustle of city life, and the blink-and-you-miss-it moments between friends and strangers. I will gladly shove as many cameras as I can in my bag to try and capture even one iota of the poetry of travel.
I primarily shoot in film as I love the ritual of loading the camera, carefully composing my scene, then developing the roll weeks after the fact just to transport myself right back to when I snapped the shot. I found my first SLR, a Minolta X-370, for $25 at a thrift store in 2020 just two days before setting out on a week-long road trip.
My sewing practice is rooted in sustainability and the whole idea of creating something new out of something old. There are endless amounts of textiles already in the world, and I do mean literal mountains of textile waste. Because of this disturbing fact, my ethos compels me to shop second-hand as much as I can. As I amassed what I consider to be too much clothing, I eventually turned to upcycling as a way to give a second, or technically third, life to these old rags. It started with me sewing tote bags. I have a deep and burning passion for bags, which has since then exploded into all sorts of different sewing projects. I’ve been sewing since 2021, when I decided to sew my sister a tote bag for her birthday.
It could be said that I am a perfectionist's worst nightmare. I measure once and cut twice. I've found that this approach lends well to my creative process, which simply involves starting. So often, just starting is the hard part, not just for creatives but for virtually any pursuit. Once I do start, I then begin to consider the overall scope and nitty-gritty details. If I do "miscut" along the way, then I try to fold that into the work itself, as it feels like a more authentic representation of myself.
As of Fall 2024, I currently live in a van from 1992 called the Goobsmobile. It's been my goal for the past several years to live in this van and travel around the country, creating that which gives me joy. Now I'm finally doing it :)
